9) Problem on Numbers

The sum of the squares of three consecutive odd numbers is 2531. What is the smallest number?
(A) 13 (B) 27  (C)23  (D).33

Answer: B

Description:
Let the numbers be x, x + 2 and x + 4.
Then, X2 + (x + 2)2 + (x + 4)2 = 2531 => 3x2 + 12x - 2511 = 0
X2 + 4x - 837 = 0     => (x - 27) (x + 31) = 0    =>   x = 27.
Hence, the numbers are 27, 29 and 31.
So , Smallest number is 27
